In this 2:09 Annuities Explained YouTube Short, Jeffrey Scott McLeod, LUTC, covers “NAIC Annuities Guide II - Questions.” I left off on page seven when reviewing the NA nic buyer guide of fixed deferred annuities. And that's not even the questions for shopping for a fixed index annuity. Do I want a fixed annuity with guaranteed interest rate or little or no risk in losing principal? If I pick a shorter or longer payout period or surrender the annuity, will the accumulated value or the way the interest is credited change? Insurance education only—not securities advice.

This Short is a quick overview—confirm features, rates, and charges in the insurance contract and NAIC Buyer’s Guide.
From the NAIC Buyer’s Guide
Fixed indexed annuities are a type of fixed annuity that earn interest based on changes in a market index; the interest rate is guaranteed never to be less than zero, even if the market goes down. When you buy an indexed annuity, you are not investing directly in the market or the index.
You usually have to pay a surrender or withdrawal charge if you take some or all of your money out of a deferred annuity during a stated period. Some contracts allow a limited free withdrawal each year (for example, 10% or less of account value).
Fees, surrender charges, and any market value adjustment can reduce what you receive. Read the contract for how charges work in your state.
